The RAH is not just a hospital
The Royal Adelaide Hospital is part of a major health, teaching and research centre at the Frome Road/North Terrace corner. It is positioned together with the medical school and other departments of the University of Adelaide, the world-renowned Hanson Research Centre, and the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science (IMVS).
Doctors, scientists, professors, medical students and others move easily between these buildings, have coffee together, and generate ideas.
This is not just about research and teaching
These things are the seeds of new treatment ideas which benefit patients directly.
The first-class international reputation of the RAH has been attributed by many experts to this clustering of resources, which is envied by other institutions interstate and overseas.
Isn't the government doing something about this?
After a lot of pressure, the South Australian Government has agreed to make space available in the proposed new hospital for research and teaching facilities. It is also proposing to build a new research institute at the western end of North terrace. But it won't be the same, as it will not replicate the entire precinct.
To demolish the hospital and rebuild it 2 km away will destroy all this. It will separate the RAH from these important institutions. It just doesn't make sense.

It meant that my specialist, the very dedicated Prof. Ian Olver, could teach his students and train younger doctors, conduct his research and look after me, all within walking distance. All of this results in a higher quality of care. The people of South Australia deserve this and the government must do everything to preserve this quality at the Frome Road Precinct.
Other South Australian families feel the same."
